From 1970 to 1974 the VOP began the year with an annual New Year's Bible Reading, a continuous event that took about 84 hours to complete. Using a variety of English versions of the Bible, as well as nearly 40 other languages, staff and persons from the community were joined by tape-recorded readings by state and national religious and political leaders. The 1973 Bible Reading (this photo) included nearly all 50 state governors (taped) and a six-hour period of reading by teenagers (in person).
