Unto One of the Least of These My Brethren

LONNIE: Welcome back to our program, Don. Lets talk today about what it means to get involved with writing to a prisoner, I mean most people are going to say, I don’t know if I want that person to know my phone number and address, how does this whole writing thing really work?

DON: You can write using a pen name if you so feel inclined and…we have never had any sort of problem. Anyhow, you write us, and we then pass that letter on to the prisoner matched up with you.

LONNIE: Now, how often can I expect to receive a letter?

DON: There is really no timeline; it’s pretty much left up to you and your prisoner.
LONNIE: Can we send the prisoners stamps?

DON: In some cases yes, but more and more prisons are cutting back on stamps because prisoners can get drugs from the glue on the stamps to make them high. After you have written for a while you learn how and what is appropriate to talk about. Never ask a prisoner why they are in prison.

LONNIE: If for some reason I become uncomfortable with the match can I get out of this system easily?

DON: Yes! We will either rematch you or if you don’t want to write anymore we take you off of our list. This ministry is fully legitimate, this is not a dating service or some kind of joke, this a ministry focused on helping those who are locked up to change their lives and find the Lord. But we don’t focus on God right away, we focus on friendship, and through this friendship hopefully questions will arise that begin to head down the path towards a better life.

LONNIE: So if a person really wants to get involved in this program how do they go about getting in contact with you?

DON: They call us on the phone, and our # is 260-492-7770 or you can go to our webpage and enroll at somonecares.org, and when you get to that webpage if you see bible study click on that and it will Take you to the Voice of Prophecy, or they can write us at PO Box 15338 Fort Wayne Indiana 46835.

LONNIE: Do you then send them a packet?

DON: We will send them a packet with an inmate so that they can start writing right away. Now if you decide not to, why you just send it back and we will send it to somebody else.

LONNIE: Why is asking a prisoner what he is in for a big no no?

DON: Because, there are so many people behind sex crimes over drugs. I witnessed face to face to a man at San Quentin, and after a year and a half I asked him what he was in here for and he told me, and it was so repulsive that as a father, as a husband I quit ministering. Satan won a big, big victory. The man got so depressed he killed himself, so it’s just not a good thing to ask why they are there. Just be a friend to that person and teach them about love and kindness.
