Paper Sunshine -- Part 4

LONNIE: Hey, wake up! It’s time to really begin living! Join us today as Don McClure of Someone Cares, shares what woke him up and led him to a way of ministering for Christ, and learn how you can reach out to prisoners as well.

CONNIE: Hello everyone! This is Connie Jeffery! Welcome to day four of our fascinating interviews with Don and Yvonne McClure of the Someone Cares Prison Ministry. Say, are you looking for a great New Years resolution? Stay tuned and learn how you can become involved in a fantastic ministry, by investing just a few minutes each week to write prisoners. It’s all made possible by Someone Cares and you can learn more by visiting www.someonecares.org. Now let’s listen in again.

LONNIE: Don and Yvonne, welcome back to our studios again today!

DON & YVONNE: Thank you!

LONNIE: Because of this broadcast, you’ve literally had things go off the charts at your headquarters.

DON: The last show we did almost scared me. We had a pile of applications that was so high…but just like that the pile was gone. The nice thing about the Lord is that He always puts people together, because inmates listen to the program, so they responded and this is that snowball rolling.

LONNIE: Now, let’s talk a little bit more about this pen friend program. Yesterday, we described how this is a completely safe program.

DON: Well, and we even have something for all of you computer savvy people out there now…You can e-mail an inmate, we will print it out, send it to the inmate and…

LONNIE: So the e-mail comes to you?

DON: Right…It comes to us and we print it out and send it to the inmate. Lonnie, there are so many dead men walking, inside of prison. They have nothing left to live for. I remember when I was in prison and a man came to visit me, and I was a punk! He told me a lot of stuff but I didn’t listen! But I heard what he said…If he had come back…But he never did. We made a promise after we started this program that we would always come back.

LONNIE: We talked about how that pen program is risk free and how you can get in touch with Someone Cares Ministry at P.O. Box 15338, Ft Wayne, IN 46885, and Yvonne; this was really a concept that was heaven born. How many Paper Sunshine exchanges do you have every year?
DON: Our budget last year was about $20,000.

LONNIE: Now, give us an example of somebody who has participated, and has blessed both the person in prison and the one writing to them.

YVONNE: Yes, just recently a lady wrote me a letter and said that her father had gone to prison to visit inmates and give Bible studies, his name was Dr. Lemon, and I had said do you have time to give it a try? She looked at that and had remembered what her father had done and she thought…She wrote me a letter telling me how much she enjoyed writing and that she is going to write to this inmate as long as she can. She told me that she now has caught the vision of what her father had.

LONNIE: This is important because what Jesus said about prison…

DON: Well, we got a letter a few years ago and it was from an inmate. He thanked me for caring, and he told me, because you cared, you matched me with an old grandma and an eighth grade class…He said, I wasn’t really looking for those people to talk too, but they led me to Jesus. He said, I got my first ever Christmas cards, 27 of them…He said today I got a letter from the governor of Indiana with my signed death warrant. He said, don’t cry, but we did! Thanks to the Paper Sunshine the next thing I see will be Jesus!

LONNIE: Amen! Someone Cares is the type of ministry that Jesus wanted!
DON: When Jesus went to the cross, He had to convicts on either side of Him, he stopped dying to save on of them, I would have been the other one at that time, thank God, that I learned about Jesus.

LONNIE: I think it’s important to point out in the book of Matthew what Jesus says about visiting prisoners and not visiting prisoners.

DON: If you don’t visit, He says you’re going to be damned…Pretty much straight up! Keep in mind folks that we aren’t just talking about the prison of incarceration, we’re talking about numerous addictions, we’re talking about the lack of knowledge. You know, if gold is valuable and if everybody could have it, it wouldn’t be! Jesus is there not to be found, not to be dug up! He’s there to be invited in.

YVONNE: It’s so important to remember that even in our churches, any church! There are people who are lonely and hurting and they are in some type of prison. It might be that they are on certain medication, they might be scared to leave their homes, you can do these things from home and never have to lay foot in a prison.
DON: Before the beginning of time, Jesus saw me…He knew what I was going to do…God gave Satan this earth. We blame God for storms, but the storm in my life was from the Devil.

LONNIE: God invites us to go out and be an example and lead people to Christ.

YVONNE: Just a smile or a simple handshake can be an outreach tool!

LONNIE: Thanks for being here with us today!

CONNIE: This is a truly amazing ministry…It’s safe and you can outreach to someone who is hurting and needing help. If you’d like to find out how to help please contact them at www.someonecares.org.
